(COLORADO SPRINGS) — An on-base dental health care provider is trying to make it easier than ever for military families to stay healthy this summer. Through its Summer Smiles Initiative, DOCS Dental is offering proactive oral health tips and reminding patients that now is a great time to schedule a check-up.
Mark Blakenship, Director of Operations of DOCS Dental, joined FOX21 Morning News on Friday, July 25, to talk about how they are trying to make care more accessible for military families. “One of the hardest things as military families is you’re moving every two to four years and every single time that you move, the active duty member gets assigned to a new clinic, but the families have to basically find new care, reestablish themselves in a new community many times of which they know nothing about,” said Blakenship. He added DOCS Dental has 25 different locations around the U.S. and one in Europe where they can transfer care.
The Summer Smiles Initiative emphasizes small actions that make a big difference:
Hydration is key: Summer activity and heat increase the need for water—not just for overall health but for oral health, too. Drinking plenty of water helps prevent dry mouth and supports saliva production, which naturally defends against tooth decay.
Make water fun for kids: Encourage children to choose water over sugary drinks with creative touches like personalized water bottles or fruit-infused water.
Pack a portable dental kit: Whether you’re heading to the field or on a road trip, keeping a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss or floss picks in your bag ensures you’re always prepared.
Don’t Skip the Mouthguard: If you or your child is participating in summer sports, wearing a mouthguard is a must. Mouthguards help prevent dental injuries during contact sports and high-impact activities—protecting teeth and keeping smiles safe while staying active.
