Mayor of Colorado Springs gives his ‘Halftime Report’

(COLORADO SPRINGS) – The 42nd Mayor of Colorado Springs, Yemi Mobolade, delivered his State of the City address, highlighting progress and ongoing challenges as he reaches the midpoint of his term.

In his address, Mayor Mobolade emphasized the city’s strong current state while slightly acknowledging a $31 million budget shortfall for 2026. This financial challenge has led to the elimination of 38 civilian positions, five furlough days for employees, and the closure of the Meadows Park Community Center.

“Fiscal stewardship has been a top priority, not just because of necessity, but because it’s our responsibility to be good stewards of limited public resources,” said Mayor Mobolade.

Ronald Rainey Jr, a newly elected Colorado Springs City Council representative wishes the Mayor would have touched on the budget issue more, but explains it’s also a top priority for him and the other members of Council, “We had some thoughts about maybe even putting together a budgetary subcommittee to dive deeper into how can we increase revenue moving into 2026,” Rainey Jr said. “We can’t be afraid of those conversations. Our citizens deserve better.”

Mayor Mobolade compared his address to a halftime report, reviewing the city’s achievements and strategies. He noted improvements in public safety, with property crime down 16%, motor vehicle thefts down 41%, and vehicle break-ins down 32%. Homicides decreased by 20%, and murders dropped nearly 30%.

The mayor also highlighted the city’s efforts in addressing homelessness, stating that 1,100 encampments were cleared, and 120 felony arrests were made. However, Councilman Dave Donelson expressed concerns about the growing number of homelessness in the latest report. “I see it personally when I drive around town,” Donelson said. “I see it in my neighborhood. I see it when I walk. We have to deal with that, and that’s going to help with garbage or trash throughout the city.”

Looking ahead, Mayor Mobolade expressed his commitment to shaping a future defined by growth, resilience, and opportunity. He also addressed infrastructure improvements, noting that over 52,000 potholes have been repaired, with plans to add 12 more members to the pothole response teams.

During the address, Mayor Mobolade honored David Lord with the Spirit of Colorado Springs Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to community organizations focused on downtown development, affordable housing, and senior advocacy.
