Access to Mount Lindsey restored after four years

(COSTILLA COUNTY, Colo.) — After several years of work with the Trinchera Blanca Ranch, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) announced that access to Mount Lindsey has been restored.

On Tuesday, March 4, the non-profit announced that the ranch legally permitted access to Mount Lindsey under an electronic waiver system. The new waiver allows access to the gully (standard) route and the ridge route.

According to CFI, when initially alerted about the reopening in February, the waiver only applied to the standard route but worked with the ranch to ensure the ridge was also reopened.

“No other routes on the mountain are authorized, nor can you access the peak legally from any other place,” CFI said via Facebook. “Entering the Ranch from any other point or trying to climb any other route will mean you are trespassing and will be doing great harm to this important relationship.”

CFI recommends those who want to hike Mt. Lindsey to obtain their waiver before leaving town. However, individuals can also find the QR code to the waiver as they enter the ranch’s property on the mountain’s shoulder. CFI said there was “great” cell service and there should be no reason why a person should attempt to climb the peak without an electronic waiver.

“Please remember that the restored climbing access to Mount Lindsey is a privilege that can be withdrawn if people do not follow the rules,” CFI said.

According to the nonprofit, the approach route to the peak is ‘one of the worst’ in the state and is a high priority for reconstruction.

“CFI continues to work with the Ranch in hopes that this waiver-based reopening works well and they gain comfort about formalizing access in a way that will allow the approach route to be reconstructed,” the nonprofit said. “Following the rules and being responsible climbers may help with that effort. However, violating the rules certainly will send a poor signal and may result in the peak being closed again.”
