(MONUMENT, Colo.) — A man allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash turned himself in to the police on Wednesday, Nov. 6, after law enforcement sought his vehicle out.
On Monday, Nov. 4, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) received a call about a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in the parking lot of McDonald’s located at 765 W. Baptist Road in Monument. When the Monument Police Department (MPD) arrived, they found a woman severely injured at the scene.
Medical aid was rendered, but attempts were unsuccessful and the woman, later identified as 47-year-old Kristy Kerst, was declared dead.
EPSO then began to look for a suspect, allegedly driving a dark Chrysler minivan with a light-colored metal trim stripe down the side and silver rims. The vehicle had no plate but significant damage to the front bumper and side. There was also a possible white handicap placard hanging from the front rear-view mirror.
Deputies also said there was a male driver and a female passenger in the front seat at the time of the crash.
On Wednesday, 41-year-old Joel Lang turned himself in at a Colorado Springs Police Department substation. The Sheriff’s Office took custody of Lang and recovered the vehicle that was allegedly involved in the incident.
Lang was booked into El Paso County Jail and is facing charges of Second-Degree Murder, Vehicular Homicide, and Duty to Report Accidents and Accidents involving death. He is being held in jail with a $50,000 bond.
