Approaching first freeze in Southern Colorado

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — As mid-October arrives, the changing season is becoming more noticeable across Southern Colorado. Temperatures have been gradually cooling, which signals that the first freeze of the season is likely not far away.

In Colorado Springs, the average first freeze typically occurs around Oct. 1. The latest first freeze on record for the city was Oct. 31, 1963, while the earliest occurred in early September. Pueblo follows a similar pattern, with an average first freeze around Oct. 8. Records there show the latest freeze happening in early November and the earliest also in early September.

Both cities are currently sitting between their average and latest recorded freeze dates, meaning colder mornings are likely on the horizon.

As the first freeze approaches, it’s important to remember the “Three P’s”:

Plants: Bring sensitive plants indoors or cover them to prevent damage.

Pets: Ensure pets are brought inside during cold overnight lows.

Pipes: Protect outdoor pipes and spigots from freezing temperatures.

These reminders not only apply to the first freeze but also serve as good practices as colder air becomes more frequent through late fall and into early winter.
