(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.) — On Saturday, April 12, the Colorado Springs Education Association brought together educators, artists, students, parents, and community members to roll up their sleeves and get creative at the Manitou Art Center.
The “Community Art Build” was organized in support of educators and students in District 11. The event offered music, food, and people painting posters, making flags, and assembling picket signs to be used to advocate for public education.
“People come out, get to know their educators in their public schools, particularly here in Colorado Springs, where things have been pretty tension-filled lately,” said Kevin Vick, President, Colorado Education Association. “We want to make sure that people understand that educators, more than anything, really care about their community and want to build exciting and interesting events for them.”
The event, which was supported by both the Colorado and National Education Associations, welcomed everyone, both seasoned artists and those who simply care about local schools.
“As educators, we know that art has always been a powerful tool to connect people and amplify messages,” said Coughlin. “This Community Art Build is about standing together—students, educators, parents, and community members—during a time when public education faces challenges at every level. We are sending a clear message: our public schools are worth fighting for.”
