Backcountry skier killed in avalanche near Crested Butte

DENVER (KDVR) — A skier was killed in a backcountry avalanche near Crested Butte Sunday.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the avalanche happened in an area of the Anthracite Range locally known as the “Playground.”

The skier was caught, buried and killed in the avalanche.

CAIC said the skier’s partners were able to locate and get him out of the avalanche debris. However, the skier died from the injuries he sustained in the avalanche.

Forecasters with CAIC will visit the avalanche site on Monday and provide more information.

The identity of the skier has not been released.
