Benign explosive device found at construction site

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Tuesday morning, March 19, a construction worker discovered what appeared to be an old mortar round at a construction site on the city’s southeast side.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers responded just before 7:30 a.m. to a report of an explosive device discovered by a construction worker in the 2700 block of Bentley Point, near the intersection of Hancock Expressway and Astrozon Boulevard.

The construction worker told police that they had uncovered what appeared to be a mortar round while moving earth. CSPD said the investigation revealed that the device was very old and rusted, but it did appear to be a military explosive device.

CSPD said the Regional Explosives Unit responded and determined that the item was hollow and inert. A bomb detection K9 searched the area, and no further suspicious devices were found.
