Bridge destroyed, fuel spilled in Boulder train collision

BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — Two trains in Boulder collided, leaving behind a messy scene Friday morning.

Just after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Boulder Police Department posted on X that two trains collided near Pearl Parkway, close to 48th Street and Arapahoe Avenue. The area is north of the Boulder Community Health Hospital.

Police said the conductors sustained minor injuries.

Boulder police have not said what factors may have led to the collision, but they did say a rail bridge was destroyed. No city property was damaged besides trees. Xcel Energy was also on scene working to fix a powerline that was affected.

Initially, Boulder police said fuel was leaking from the engine into Boulder Creek, however, investigators now believe the fuel was absorbed by sand that spilled from one of the cars.

BNSF Railway has taken over the investigation, which is expected to last several days.

Because of the collision and the cleanup, several roads were affected. However, at around 7:10 a.m., Boulder police said all roads had reopened.
