(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is warning the public about sky lanterns, as well as general fire danger awareness after the charred remnants of a sky lantern were found at Garden of the Gods Park.
Thankfully, no fire was sparked by the lantern, though the discovery is a frightening reminder that anything could happen at any time when fire danger is high, even when we’ve seen recent rain.
“Just because we’ve had some moisture does not mean we’re off the hook!” CSFD posted on social media.
CSFD said the lantern was found the week of July 29 by park rangers in Garden of the Gods.
“This could have had a disastrous outcome with how dry our fuels are,” CSFD warned.
As the lantern can be seen clinging to the brush in the park where it was found, this situation could have had dire consequences, had the brush ignited and spread around one of Colorado Springs’ biggest and most popular parks.
CSFD reminds locals and visitors alike that sky lanterns like this one, powered by a real flame, are strictly prohibited by the City of Colorado Springs. Anyone caught in violation of the City’s fire code could face fines, jail time, and/or probation.
“Please remember to share the responsibility in keeping our community safe from fires!” said CSFD.
