(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) has decided to temporarily close East Library starting Monday, Sept. 16. due to safety concerns and construction.
East Library began a month-long repairs project in its parking lot on Sept. 3. To remain open to patrons of the library, PPLD believed that the project could be done in phases while the busiest library continued to serve the community. However, those plans changed once construction began.
“Now that construction has started, it has brought to light overwhelming parking constraints and safety concerns,” PPLD wrote on their website. “To ensure everyone’s safety and to allow the work to be completed without issues, the Library will be closed for the duration of the project.”
Repairs are expected to be finished near the end of September, according to PPLD. During that time, the library’s book drop will be closed and programs have been canceled as of Sept. 12. The community can also expect:
Holds at the hold shelf in the library will be given extended expiration dates, allowing seven days for pickup once the library reopens. If people would like their hold sooner, they can call (719) 531-6333 and select 0 for assistance.
East Library checkouts that are due during the closure will have their due dates extended through the reopening of the library.
Library staff will be contacting meeting room and study room holders to relocate or reschedule their reservations.
The library will continue the project in five phases:
Prep phase: Concrete and curb repairs
Phase 1 (Red): Back northwest corner of the lot.
Phase 2 (Yellow): North lot that includes the drive-through book drop.
Phase 3 (Green): Front/East lot and portion of access road outbound lane.
Phase 4 (Blue) and Phase 5 (Lavender): Acess road inbound and outbound lanes between Library Lane and Union Boulevard.
“The Library apologizes for any inconveniences during this time and appreciates your cooperation and understanding as we improve the parking lot and our patrons’ experiences at East Library,” the library wrote.
