Cañon City police arrest four suspects of car break-ins

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The Cañon City Police Department (CCPD) said since January police have seen a rise in vehicle break-ins and several firearms stolen. As of Thursday, April 25, several suspects were arrested and firearms recovered.

According to CCPD, in January and February, police had 48 reports of vehicle break-ins, as of Tuesday, April 30, the number of reports had increased to 99.

Based on the increase Detectives started looking into the reports and together with patrol officers, several suspects were identified. On April 25 four suspects were arrested concerning the break-ins.

According to police, an important factor in these cases was a majority of the vehicles were unlocked and/or had personal items in plain view. Police also said a number of unsecured firearms were reported stolen during the incidents and through CCPD’s investigation were able to recover; a .308 rifle, a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber handgun, and a .223 caliber AR-15 rifle.

Police said they do not believe these suspects are the only ones involved in the break-ins and are asking the public to report anything suspicious so officers can investigate.

Police are reminding the public to lock vehicles and to take firearms and other high-value items out of the vehicle before leaving it unattended.
