(COLORADO) — The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) is reviewing an incident where an inmate walked away from the Delta Correctional Center (DCC).
According to CDOC, on May 28, at around 5 p.m., Blake Johnson, an inmate at DCC, walked away after the facility’s 5 p.m. count. At around 6:30 a.m., the Delta Sheriff’s Office received a report from a civilian who had seen a person in green walking along 25 Mesa Road near the facility.
Deputies responded immediately, per CDOC, and were able to locate Jones in the area.
“He was taken into custody without incident approximately 28 minutes after the initial report, and transported back to the facility by the Sheriff’s Office,” CDOC wrote.
The Colorado Department of Corrections added that the incident remains under review and is also reviewing internal procedures to ensure the continued safety of the public, staff, and those in custody.
“This incident highlights the critical role of community awareness and strong partnerships with local law enforcement,” said André Stancil, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections. “Thanks to the swift action of the Delta County Sheriff’s Office and the attentiveness of a local resident, this situation was resolved quickly and safely. Inmate Jones has since been transferred to a higher-security facility.”
