(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZoo) announced that three ring-tailed lemurs were born recently, and the matriarch of Lemur Island has her hands full.
According to CMZoo, on Thursday, March 20, Allagash, the 12-year-old lemur matriarch, gave birth to two of the lemur children, but the third was born to Allagash’s sister Rogue. CMZoo said a group of lemurs is called a conspiracy and is matriarchal, with the dominant female’s offspring typically second in command, followed by any other females.
The day after the births, chasing happened on Lemur Island, where Rogue was displaced and separated from her offspring. Despite the staff trying to reunite them, Rogue did not accept the baby. Allagash accepted the baby and is taking care of all three.

The zoo said the babies are consistently nursing and clinging to Allagash, both behaviors indicate the pups are healthy and bonding well. The babies at four weeks have started to venture away from Allagash and seem to enjoy jumping up and down in the sunshine.
CMZoo staff said in efforts to reestablish peace and safety for the troop, Rogue is separated by mesh from the rest of the group, but staff have seen calm interactions through mesh between the group and Rogue, with Rogue grooming Allagash–a sign of calm respect and bonding between the sisters, and the babies.
CMZoo said they hope to one day take steps to reunite the troop. At this time, the sex of the babies is not known, and there are no plans to name the babies yet.
