(NATIONAL) — Recent data reveals that many NFL fans—most notably rivals of the Kansas City Chiefs—are unfollowing Taylor Swift on social media.
BetOnline uses Facebook and Instagram data to create graphics that reflect sports trends. The data leading up to this year’s Superbowl reveals a trend that is specifically related to Taylor Swift. BetOnline compared the percentage of people who follow an NFL team on Facebook and Instagram accounts, and also follow Taylor Swift, and created two visual charts that compare the numbers from February 2024 to September 2023’s data (below).
Unsurprisingly, Chiefs fans have begun following Taylor Swift en masse, going from 22.31% in September 2023 to 39.55% in February 2024. Eagles fans show a similar jump, largely due to the connection to Jason Kelce, center for the Eagles. Fans of Chiefs division rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers, as well as the Raiders, showed the largest drop in Taylor Swift love.
But it’s not just Chiefs rivals that have been unfollowing Swift. Fans of all the NFL teams (other than the Chiefs and Eagles) show data that means they are unfollowing Taylor.
While politics and other factors are likely also at play, and the changing percentages cannot be reliably linked entirely to NFL team loyalty, it will be interesting to see how the numbers change once the Superbowl is over—or if Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift ever break up.
