City Council approves question to repeal retail marijuana

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28, a measure was passed on a vote of 7-2 that would ask voters to repeal the legalization of retail marijuana sales in April’s municipal election.

This measure came after Councilman Dave Donelson claimed the wording used on November’s ballot was confusing to the average voter.

“I think thousands of people that voted yes on 300 thought they were voting to impose penalties if someone gave marijuana to someone under 21, things like that,” Donelson explained.

Donelson said that this would change the city’s homelessness and crime rates, and he would like to give the city a second chance to vote. However, community members feel they know what they have gotten themselves into.

One Combat Veteran, Kent Jarnig, uses cannabis regularly to help him with day-to-day life after war.

“This is a good product that helps people,” Jarnig stated. “If somebody chooses to buy it because it helps them as it does me, why should it not be available?”

But Donelson said he simply wants to ensure that what the voters truly want wasn’t lost on verbiage that may have tripped some up in November.

“If the repeal fails, then we have our answer,” Donelson said. “You know, this question is straightforward, I’ll know citizens wants recreational marijuana sales. I accept that.”

At the meeting on Tuesday, Donelson offered a simplified question for the ballot to be sure that this is what the community wants this April election.
