(COLORADO SPRINGS) — City leaders and public works officials gathered on Thursday, March 14 to give an update on conditions and snowplow operations in response to the ongoing winter storm impacting the Pikes Peak Region.
With more snow expected, the city is asking people to stay home and avoid the roads to give crews the time and space they need to work.
With more than 50 active snow plows, city crews are hard at work removing snow that is accumulating on the roads.
“Our folks are working hard trying to get our roadways cleared,” said Corey Farkas, Public Works Operations Division Manager City of Colorado Springs. “If you do need to go out this evening, we’re not expecting extremely cold temperatures to where we’ll get a lot of freezing, but there still could be some slush on the roadways,” said Farkas.
Luckily the City of Colorado Springs said they were prepared for the storm. Officials said the recent warm temperatures are working in their favor, but it still may take crews a few days to clear up the roads.
The City of Colorado Springs said it is focusing on clearing the primary and secondary roadways before moving into residential areas.
“It could be tomorrow before we get into priority threes. There may be some areas where we may not be able to get into until Saturday,” said Kevin Maston, Executive Director for Public Works El Paso County.
City leaders are asking drivers to use caution around working snowplows and remember to give them plenty of room to pass and maintain a safe distance.
“One thing for everybody to remember is that we don’t get into the residential neighborhoods until all of the primaries and secondaries are taken care of and all of the slush and snow is plowed off of those roadways,” said Farkas.
