Cog railcar “Myrna” finds a new home in Woodland Park

(WOODLAND PARK, Colo.) — A cog railcar, lovingly named “Myrna” after the previous owner’s late wife, has found a new home in Woodland Park after controversial development plans caused it to lose its previous home.

On Tuesday, March 19, the City of Woodland Park Government announced on its social media that the Mayor and City Council had approved a resolution to relocate the Myrna cog rail car onto City property at the Centennial trailhead.

The City Council hopes that by moving Myrna to that location, visitors will more easily be able to access the railcar, as it has plenty of accessible parking space, access to the trail, and beautiful views of Pikes Peak. Additionally, a historic cabin at the trailhead will soon be used to host events and activities from the Parks and Recreation Department, which will encourage visitors to the cog.

The location will require some engineering, but will still pose fewer challenges than other sites considered in the move.

The move of Myrna from its previous location has met with protests from locals and the family who originally donated the railcar to the city. The small area of land that has housed Myrna up until this point is near Bergstrom Park, and has been under consideration for development, necessitating the move.

A Change.org petition was started to petition the Woodland Park City Council to leave the railcar where it was and incorporate the small patch of land into Bergstrom Park. The petition raised 668 signatures, but in the end, the City Council chose the trailhead as the new permanent home for Myrna.
