Colorado Springs bike shop burglarized twice in two days

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A bike shop on South Academy Boulevard is reeling from not one, but two break-ins over the weekend in which numerous bikes worth thousands of dollars were taken, including one with sentimental value.

Steve Kaczmarek, CEO of Borealis Fat Bike shop, reached out to FOX21 News to share the news of the burglaries, as well as security camera footage he hopes will help identify the bike thieves.

According to Kaczmarek, the first break-in occurred early Sunday morning, March 3, around 3 a.m., and Kaczmarek became aware after his security firm alerted to a glass break. An employee responded to the store and found the front door had been broken into, and two bikes were stolen.

Borealis specializes in custom building a specific kind of recreational bike called a fat bike, so-called because the tires are oversized, best for riding in soft terrain like sand or snow. The two that were stolen early Sunday morning were a standard fat bike and the first bike the shop ever created, which Kaczmarek said has significant sentimental value and will be difficult to sell, as it is 11 years old, as old as the company itself, and is not mass produced.

“Bike one is very unique,” said Kaczmarek. “It’s a one-of-a-kind, it actually has decals on it rather than a normal paint job. Honestly it’s going to be impossible to sell, I don’t know what value it has other than sentimental… it’s 11 years old, it’s part of the company. It’s sad.”

After that first break-in, Kaczmarek said he stayed late boarding up the door on Sunday night, only to wake up Monday morning to another alert from his security firm saying it had happened again. The suspects broke the lower window of the door, Kaczmarek said, and this time stole two high-end electric bikes worth around $6,500 each.

Based on retail value, Kaczmarek estimates approximately $16,000 worth of bikes were taken.

Security camera footage from Borealis shows three men breaking into the business by throwing a rock at the front door on the first night, and kicking the bottom window of the door out on the second break-in. Kaczmarek hopes someone recognizes the suspects.

FOX21 News reached out to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), which said it is aware of a burglary in the area but could not provide additional details.

If you recognize any of the suspects, you can contact CSPD at (719)444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at (719)634-STOP (7867).
