(COLROADO SPRINGS) — As the government shutdown continues to affect federal workers and SNAP funding, a locally owned store in Colorado Springs is stepping up to help the community.
Jim Krug, owner of My Bargain Mart, has been proactive in ensuring his store remains stocked by acquiring inventory from a closing Safeway in Lamar, over 100 miles away.
“I want people to be able to take care of their kids and also not go to bed hungry. It’s the worst feeling in the world,” said Jim Krug, owner of My Bargain Mart.
Krug has been in the grocery business since 2005, and My Bargain Mart is his 12th location. He is committed to keeping prices low, offering basic chickens at a dollar a pound and beef between $2 to $4 a pound.
As well as condiments starting at just 50 cents and for bread for 99 cents.
In addition to low prices, Krug has put together several specials, including a deal on Sloppy Joe mix and buns, which can make 8-12 sandwiches for just $2.50.
My Bargain Mart also offers a 10% discount for seniors and military personnel, and accepts SNAP and EBT payments, making it accessible to more community members.
Krug’s efforts extend beyond his store, as he donates extra supplies to food banks to help ensure everyone is fed, including frozen pies from his newest shipment…just in time for the holidays.
With a focus on affordability and community support, My Bargain Mart continues to serve as a vital resource for Colorado Springs residents during challenging times.
