Community invited to memorial for Bishop Castle builder

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A memorial service is planned for the visionary behind one of Colorado’s most unique attractions–Bishop Castle.

James “Jim” Roland Bishop spent nearly 60 years constructing and designing the iconic castle off Highway 165 in Rye. The castle stands 16 stories high with winding spiral staircases, stained glass windows, and even a metal dragon that breathes fire.

Bishop passed away on Nov. 21, leaving a monumental legacy and cherished memories for all those who ever visited the castle or spent time talking to its builder.

“A survivor, renegade, visionary, humanitarian and at times a madman genius, Jim’s determination to create an evolving legacy tested every limit and literally moved mountains,” wrote Bishop Castle on Facebook.

Bishop welcomed anyone who wanted to witness the wonder of his castle at no charge, often conversing with visitors and leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.

“Jim counted the thousands of guests who visited Bishop Castle among those friends. Every rock was placed by his hand with the intention of creating a monument to be witnessed and enjoyed by all, without restriction, and free from government rule,” Bishop Castle said in its memorial post on social media. “His talent was unmatched and his storytelling will be deeply missed.”

A memorial service is planned at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pueblo at 10 a.m. on Dec. 6. The Bishop family welcomes cards and donations sent to Bishop Castle, 12705 State Hwy 165, Rye, CO 81069. There will also be a public memorial at the castle in summer 2025, with details to be released at a later date.
