(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Pueblo Police have arrested Romello Hernandez in connection with the shooting of 13-year-old Diamond Sanchez near the Arkansas Riverwalk on July 14.
Sanchez remains in critical condition after being shot near Elizabeth and Greenwood Streets, a location known for safety concerns among local businesses.
“You have to be aware of what you’re doing, and you really want to be conscious of what’s going on,” said Alex Gardener, Chef and Consultant at 1129 Spirits and Eatery.
The Arkansas Riverwalk is one of Pueblo’s most visited areas, but increased foot traffic has raised safety concerns.
Gardner noted that the area is poorly lit and has a higher homeless population, contributing to safety issues. Gardner, who has raised three children in the area, advises against roaming the area alone at night, especially for teenagers.
Pueblo enforces a curfew for those under 18 after 10 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday, which some locals believe is necessary to prevent incidents like the shooting.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident and urge anyone with information to contact Pueblo Crime Stoppers.
