(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Coronado High School’s football team is on the brink of its best season in over a decade, thanks to the dynamic duo of Thomas Buckmiller and Lyrik Smith.
Buckmiller currently leads the state in passing yards, while Smith ranks second in receiving yards, highlighting their exceptional performance on the field.
“I would characterize it as like a brotherhood,” said Buckmiller, emphasizing the close-knit relationship he shares with Lyrik Smith.
“Tommy and Lyrik, they come up with the big plays,” said coach Robert Leboeuf, acknowledging their knack for making significant contributions during games.
The partnership between Buckmiller and Smith has been forged through practice and dedication in the offseason. “Putting time together, throwing the ball, catching the ball with one another, just like when nobody else is watching,” said Smith, describing their commitment to honing their skills.
With one more win, Coronado football will achieve its most successful season since 2014, with Buckmiller and Smith leading the way. But the two want to make sure their impact on the program is felt for years to come.
“My first two years we were completely defeated, we went 0-20,” Buckmiller said. “I think that can’t-take-us-down mentality is the best thing I want to leave here.”
