Cottonwood Flat Fire starts in Battlement Mesa; Evacuations ordered

UPDATE: Highway 6 between Mile Point 76 and Mile Point 82 has been closed in both directions due to fire activity. Travelers should expect delays.

GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — At 3:02 p.m., Cottonwood Fire started near the 1800 Block of County Road in Battlement Mesa.

The vegetation fire, visible on I-70 between Parachute and Rulison, has grown up to two acres. It is spreading to the east along County Road 309.

Evacuations have been put in place within a one-mile radius of 1800 County Road. An evacuation warning is active for residences within two miles of the fire location.

Three large air tankers, two single air tankers and four type-one helicopters have been requested to assist.
