DENVER (KDVR) — Albertsons Companies, which owns 103 Safeway stores in the state of Colorado, released a list of 91 stores across the state it plans to sell if a planned merger between the company and Kroger is approved.
Of these, two are Albertsons-branded stores and 89 are Safeway-branded stores. With 103 Safeway stores in the state, that means that all but 14 Safeway stores in the state would be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based company.
This includes all locations within Denver, Aurora and Boulder, among many more.
According to a divestiture plan released by the two companies in April, C&S Wholesale would license the Safeway brand in Colorado, meaning the stores would likely not have to rebrand if the deal goes through.
Both the Federal Trade Commission and the state of Colorado have filed lawsuits to block the merger. Those lawsuits are still pending, and the sale was on hold while the lawsuits go through the courts.
The planned sale also includes two distribution centers in Denver and the Denver Dairy Plant.

United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7, which represents grocery store workers in Colorado and Wyoming, reacted to the list and said it was a “last-ditch release.”
“Kroger and Albertsons have known what stores they plan to divest for months,” UFCW Local 7 President Kim Cordova said. “And the last-ditch release of the list today is an underhanded attempt to influence the courts and create the perception that the mega-merger is close to final, creating more uncertainty for our members.”
Given there are 103 Safeway-branded stores and 89 planned divestitures, 14 Safeway-branded stores would presumably not be sold if the deal goes through. According to the published plan, these stores would be re-branded following the merger.
