(COLORADO SPRINGS) — One councilmember allegedly issued a strong call for action against certain Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) Board of Trustees members during a city council session that was held on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
Councilmember Dave Donelson called on the PPLD Board of Trustees to hold another vote on renewing the one-year lease for Rockrimmon Library. During the meeting, Donelson addressed trustees Aaron Salt, Erin Bents, and Angela Dougan who voted against the lease extension during the meeting on Dec. 4.
During the second vote, the Board of Trustees decided on a 5-2 vote not to renew the Rockrimmon Library’s lease, and the location would remain permanently closed after shutting down on Dec. 1.
Donelson warned that failure to reverse their decision would lead to demands for their resignation or efforts to remove them from their roles.
Individuals with the Save Rockrimmon Library activist group attended the meeting on Dec. 10, calling for another meeting to extend the library’s lease for another year.
“We approached the Pikes Peak Library District Board of Trustees in good faith, asking for more time to find a clear, community-supported solution,” said Director of the Save Rockrimmon Library Karla Powers. “We demonstrated that their reasons for closing the library were either incorrect or surmountable, but the Trustees refused to change their vote. Now, we are turning to the city to help secure the resources necessary to keep this community service open.”
The lease deadline for the library is Dec. 31.
