CPW confirms drowning at Lake Pueblo State Park

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has confirmed a drowning at Lake Pueblo State Park that occurred on Thursday evening, June 19.

CPW officers responded to a possible drowning at Lake Pueblo on Thursday evening. Witnesses reported that an individual, a man, without a life jacket, had flipped off an inflatable tube and gone underwater just after 7 p.m., approximately 30 to 60 yards from shore in the south fishing area.

At that time, water temperatures were in the low 70s.

CPW was alerted at around 7:15 and was on shore at the same time. Nearby CPW boat patrol crews were alerted, and at that time, they launched and initiated a grid search with on-board sonar at 7:18 p.m. CPW told FOX21 News that the CPW Marine Evidence Recovery Team was en route with additional sonar and an underwater drone at around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, June 20, the Marine Evidence Recovery Team recovered the victim, who was pronounced dead on the scene by the Pueblo County Coroner.

“CPW offers condolences to the family and friends of the victim, and everyone involved in the incident,” said Becky Buist, Operations Manager at Lake Pueblo State Park.

The Pueblo County Coroner will determine the cause of death and will identify the victim at a later time.

CPW has reported three fatalities in Lake Pueblo in 2025, with this being the fourth death. Throughout the boating and water recreation season, CPW encourages all park visitors to always wear a life jacket while in the water.
