CPW: Man drowned at Lake Pueblo State Park while helping kids out of ‘rough waters’

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has provided an update on the suspected drowning at Lake Pueblo State Park.

On Wednesday afternoon, May 14, rangers from Lake Pueblo State Park received a call for help around 2:45 p.m. According to CPW, the man went out to help kids swimming in rough waters before he drowned.

CPW said the surrounding park visitors saw him go underwater and went to pull him out. Witnesses, park staff, and medical personnel all assisted with CPR for approximately 40 minutes, but were unsuccessful.

Two of the children were the victims, and two were friends. CPW said all kids are safe and with their respective guardians.

“CPW offers condolences to the family and friends of the victim and everyone involved in the incident,” said Becky Buist, Operations Manager at Lake Pueblo State Park.

The man was not wearing a life jacket, per CPW, and the water temperature was cold in the upper 50s with heavy winds.

Ahead of summer holidays, CPW encourages all visitors in the water to wear a life jacket, check water levels, and be aware of the dangers of cold water shock, which happens when water is below 68 degrees.
