(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) is celebrating the opening of what it calls a one-of-a-kind universally accessible playground designed by students.
According to CSDB, the playground started as a class project in 2018 and turned into a multi-year student initiative to create a playground with equipment access to all CSDB students.
CSDB said after several years of student planning and fundraising, CSDB facilities director Mike Nero used the student’s design concept to secure state funding. Nunn Construction and N.E.S Landscape Architects were hired to design the playground influenced by the knowledge of the staff members and student feedback.
According to CSDB, the playground features universally accessible equipment as well as unique features, which allow blind students to navigate and play independently without canes.
