(COLORADO) — Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to multiple crashes on Thursday, Jan. 30 due to the snowstorm, which caused hazardous conditions for several drivers.
CSP said on Thursday snow quickly covered the roads that resulted in stranded motorists, several crashes, and one fatal crash.
Troopers responded to reports of vehicles stuck on I-70 in Elbert County leading to the road being closed eastbound at milepost 358. The stuck drivers were helped back onto the road and the road was treated by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
In El Paso County, troopers responded to a non-injury crash on I-25 near milepost 121, south of Fountain. During the investigation, another driver hit a CSP vehicle. The trooper and the driver were not injured, and roads were not closed during the investigation.
In Fremont County, troopers responded to multiple crashes on Highway 115 near Penrose. One of the crashes on Highway 115 near milepost 18 north of Penrose was fatal and happened at about 7:15 a.m. on Thursday. CSP said the initial reports were that the crash was a two-vehicle head-on collision and one driver was pronounced dead on the scene. The crash caused a temporary closure of Highway 115.
The fatal crash is under investigation and the deceased will be identified by the Fremont County Coroner’s Office.
“Colorado weather can present many challenging and often unexpected driving conditions. Motorists should recognize during these conditions to drive slow and cautiously,” wrote CSP. “The Colorado State Patrol reminds drivers to always be prepared for rapid changes to weather and road conditions, while also monitoring weather news sources in anticipation of a coming storm.”
