CSPD arrests theft suspect who attempted escape

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) arrested a 25-year-old man after he was found with a stolen car and then tried to escape.

On Wednesday, July 2, CSPD’s Motor Vehicle Theft unit located a stolen blue 2015 Subaru Legacy in the area of N. Chestnut Street and Garden of the Gods Road near I-25. During surveillance, the driver was seen in possession of a handgun, and later purchased ammunition from a local outdoor sports store.

With the help of the Colorado State Patrol air unit, the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Sammy Williams, was followed to Shadow Mountain apartments. The Tactical Enforcement Unit was contacted and responded to take Williams into custody when he was outside the car; however, he entered the vehicle and tried to escape.

A sergeant was able to conduct a contact block, preventing the car from leaving. Once Williams was blocked, he surrendered to police. He was in possession of a loaded Rock Island Armory M1911 45 caliber handgun.

He was charged with Motor Vehicle Theft, Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender, and Obstruction. He was taken to the Criminal Justice Center for booking.
