CSPD: Man follows suspicious vehicles, leading to shooting

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A man followed two suspicious vehicles after observing what appeared to be preparations for a burglary, leading to shots being fired at his vehicle in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 15, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

CSPD reported that around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, a call came in reporting a shooting near the intersection of North Murray Boulevard and South Carefree Circle. Officers responded to the 3800 block of Maizeland Road, a few blocks west of the incident, and spoke to the man who had called in the shooting.

The man stated that he had seen two vehicles in a parking lot involved in what appeared to be suspicious activity, which he believed was “casing” one of the businesses at the corner of Maizeland and North Academy Boulevard. The vehicles suddenly left the area, and the man thought they had been spooked by the fact that he was observing them.

According to CSPD, the man stated that he followed the two vehicles east on Maizeland and then north on Murray. As the cars approached South Carefree, one of them, a dark sedan, turned left, and the other, described as “a dark colored boxy vehicle,” stopped in the middle of the road on Murray. The driver of the boxy vehicle fired multiple gunshots at the victim.

CSPD reported that the man’s car had several bullet holes in the engine compartment of his car, and it appeared a bullet had grazed the top of the baseball cap he had been wearing. When officers went to the location of the shooting, they found several fired cartridge casings.

CSPD attempted to identify the suspect vehicles, but in the meantime learned of a smash-and-grab burglary at a business licensed to sell firearms in the 300 block of Main Street in Security, just off of Highway 85. Deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) responded and secured the scene.

According to CSPD, the dark sedan had been used to back into the business, crashing through the front door. Officers responded and impounded the dark sedan.

CSPD stated that the investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been made at this time.
