CSPD releases event briefing video of April 13 shooting

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released the officer-worn body camera footage for the officer-involved shooting that happened on Sunday, April 13, at the old Red Lobster location on North Academy Boulevard.

On April 13, shortly before 1 p.m., officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving multiple people in the 4900 block of North Academy Boulevard between North Union Boulevard and Flintridge Drive.

CSPD said that when the first officer arrived on the scene, she heard at least one gunshot and saw a woman lying on the ground. When the officer got out of her car, she started taking fire from the direction of the suspect. The officer moved towards cover and fired at least one round from her weapon.

The suspect, later identified as 51-year-old Vonderrick Rayford of Wisconsin, ran from the area. CSPD said two days later, on Tuesday, April 15, Rayford was involved in another officer-involved shooting in Dallas County, Iowa, where he was killed.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the shooting as per policy and will submit its findings to the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office when complete.
