CSU Pueblo bringing back July 4 fireworks after 17 years

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — After a nearly two-decade hiatus, Colorado State University (CSU) Pueblo is bringing back its beloved Fourth of July celebration with a modern twist that includes southern Colorado’s first-ever synchronized fireworks and drone show.

CSU Pueblo’s “Let Freedom Howl” event is a family-friendly, patriotic display that will meld classic Independence Day fireworks with a modern drone show. Set for Friday, July 4, the celebration kicks off at 2 p.m. on the west side of the CSU Pueblo campus, culminating in the spectacular synchronized fireworks and drone show at 9:15 p.m.

Originally launched in the mid-1990s, CSU Pueblo’s Independence Day festivities drew thousands annually before being paused in 2009 due to budget constraints. Now, the university said it is bringing the celebration back with renewed energy and innovation, thanks to a partnership with the Pueblo Symphony Association and support from local sponsors.

“This is more than just a fireworks show,” said event organizers. “It’s the return of a beloved tradition that created lasting memories for generations of Pueblo families.”

Admission and parking are free, and attendees can look forward to a live DJ, water zone, yard games, food trucks, vendors, and Jim Curry’s Premier John Denver Tribute Show with Pueblo Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. in the Hasan Amphitheatre.
