(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Junior “rocket scientists” from Harrison School District 2 (D2) launched their own handmade creations on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Memorial Park.
“I learned, like how to make the parachute come out good,” said Nylo Washington, D2 5th grader. “I kind of messed it up while we were driving here. But then I rebuilt it how it’s supposed to be built. And so it went even further.”
The Colorado Springs Rocket Society, a local model rocketry club connected to the National Association of Rocketry, put on the event with the goal of getting kids in the community excited about a potential future in the STEM field.
“We want to grow our own engineers, our own engineers, scientists, mathematicians,” said Tom Walker of Lockheed Martin and a member of the 5th Grade Rocket Day Committee. “And this is how we go looking for the kids that are interested in doing that.”
