D2 superintendent given Women in School Leadership Award

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Harrison School District 2 (D2) announced that Superintendent Dr. Wendy Birhanzel was recognized for her dedication to public education with the Women in School Leadership Award on Friday, March 7.

The award was presented to Birhanzel at the yearly American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Conference on Education held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Students and staff welcomed her back to D2 on Monday, March 10 with a celebratory lineup.

“This honor is a testament to our incredible students, dedicated staff, and invaluable community partners in D2,” said Birhanzel. “It reaffirms that our achievements are being recognized and that our district continues to defy expectations. While some may see obstacles, we see opportunities—I believe we’re just getting started.”

Birhanzel has over 20 years of experience in public education and has served in her current role at D2 since 2019. She earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership in Urban School Settings from the University of Southern California.

“The AASA Women in School Leadership Awards were created for amazing leaders like our honorees today,” said David R. Schuler, executive director, AASA. “They have a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to student success, staff development, and innovation in education.”
