DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day: Dispose of expired or unused medications safely

(COLORADO) — The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is happening this month, and encourages people to remove old, unwanted, or expired medications from their homes to ensure safe disposal.

“DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting,” according to the website.

The next Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time.

According to the DEA, collection sites will not accept the following: syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. “Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage.”

“In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed 19.2 million pounds (9,600 tons) of medication from circulation since its inception,” according to the DEA.
