Did you know? Dogs can be an official witness at weddings in Colorado

DENVER (KDVR) — Weddings bring rings, white dresses, tuxedos and flowers — and for people in Colorado, that can also mean a “signature” from a furbaby.

According to the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder, Colorado law allows several people to sign a marriage license as the officiant. This includes people like judges, magistrates, authorized public officials, ordained clergy, tribal officials, or even the couple.

When a couple gets married without an officiant, it’s called self-solemnization, which is only allowed in a few states, including Colorado. This is the marriage law that lets furbabies take part in the ceremony.

A dog or cat — or even an iguana — can be listed as the officiant in Colorado. While they can’t legally officiate a wedding, the Jeffco office said that when a pet is listed as the officiant, this means the couple is self-solemnizing, which gives the couple freedom to make it their own.

For many, that includes bringing in their pets to “sign” the license as an official witness.

The marriage law allows pets to be included as witnesses, and some counties even allow pets to sign the license. In Jefferson County, pets can “sign” marriage licenses with a paw print, as long as all required legal language on the certificate is legible.

While the Jeffco office said Colorado law allows for self-solemnization everywhere in the state, some county offices have differing internal policies. So, before you grab rings and a leash, make sure to check county polices.
