(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) said first responders needed two doses of Narcan and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to save a man suffering from an overdose on Saturday, Sept. 6.
According to EPSO, on Saturday at around 8 p.m., deputies were called to a home in the Security-Widefield area of unincorporated El Paso County. When deputies arrived, they found a 40-year-old man unresponsive on the floor, with the caller on the phone with the dispatcher and administering CPR.
Deputies took over lifesaving efforts and administered Narcan. Soon after, emergency medical personnel from the Security Fire Department arrived and continued lifesaving efforts. After a second dose of Narcan and using an AED, the man regained consciousness.
Deputies also found and seized over 100 grams of methamphetamine from inside the home.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the deadly dangers posed by illegal narcotics in our community,” said Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “The individual involved was extremely fortunate—fortunate a friend recognized the emergency and called 911, fortunate for the professionalism of our dispatchers, and fortunate for the rapid, coordinated response of our deputies and medical personnel. Without those actions, this overdose could have had a very different outcome. While we remain steadfast in our enforcement efforts, we also urge the public to understand the life-threatening risks these substances bring into our homes and neighborhoods.”
EPSO said Narcan or naloxone is available to the public at El Paso County Public Health locations. People can get free Narcan kits, which contain two 4mg nasal spray doses, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. except for lunch break from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
