Fifth grader honored for saving mom’s life

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — It was just a regular day at Abrams Elementary School, or at least that’s what 10-year-old Isabelle Phillips thought.

“We also have a very special surprise award for one extra special student,” said the school’s principal at the monthly assembly. A 911 dispatcher and other emergency services staff, surprised Phillips’ at the assembly with the 911 Hero award.

“I was so happy and proud of her, I actually cried,” said Tavala Phillips, Isabelle’s mom.

Isabelle called 911 for her mom, who suffered a seizure while at home. “My seizures are very bad, she saved my life. There’s no doubt about it, she saved my life,” said Tavala.

While Isabelle might disagree, the dispatcher said she did better than most adults. She stayed calm and reassured her brothers, all while following the instructions from dispatch.

“I was still shaking some because I was so scared,” said Isabelle. “I’m just really happy that I did that, and proud of myself because if I didn’t do that, if I didn’t know, she’d probably not be here right now; that really scares me whenever I think about that.”

The dispatcher said you should talk with the kids in your life about 911, to make sure they’re ready for emergencies just like Isabelle is. You never know, it could end up saving your life.
