Fishing is free in Colorado on these dates

DENVER (KDVR) — Temperatures in Colorado are starting to warm up and the fish are starting to bite. Anglers of all ages will have the chance to fish for free this weekend.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering a free fishing weekend for residents and nonresidents on June 1-2. This means that anglers are free to cast their lines without purchasing a permit.

“The free fishing weekend is a great way to get outside with family and friends and take advantage of Colorado’s extensive opportunities to fish for a myriad of cold and warm water fish species,” said CPW on its website.

While a permit is not required this weekend, CPW reminds anglers that all other rules and regulations apply.

Colorado fishing resources

If you are ready to get out on the water and enjoy a free activity, CPW is offering some resources on how to find the best catch.

CPW publishes a weekly report that provides information on events and stock from bodies of water around the state. The report is free and available on the department’s website.

There is also an interactive atlas that shows every body of water in Colorado that allows fishing. There are options to find family-friendly waters or more remote fly fishing options.

CPW also has a stocking report that shows the lakes, ponds and rivers that are stocked with catchable trout between 9-12 inches. This report is updated every Friday.

If you can’t make it out on the water this weekend, fishing licenses can be purchased at any CPW office or from over 600 sale locations across the state. Licenses may also be purchased online.
