Fort Carson fire now 80% contained, no overnight growth

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — A fire on Fort Carson that started on Thursday, March 28 is now at 80% containment and is holding at just over 106 acres according to a statement from Fort Carson officials.

Fort Carson said the fire, called the Sam Houston fire, began on Thursday at around 1 p.m. behind Patriot Elementary School. While no students were in session due to spring break the school was evacuated. The Cheyenne Mountain Child Development Center and Patriot School Age Services were also evacuated. Pre-evacuation orders were issued for the surrounding area.

Due to wind shifts making the fire erratic and the fire’s proximity to buildings and houses a large response to the fire and calls for mutual aid were made. According to Michael Madrid with the Fort Carson Fire Department, the majority of the fire was quickly knocked down.

The pre-evacuation orders were canceled at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and most children from Cheyenne Mountain Child Development Center and Patriot School Age Services were reunited with their families

According to Fort Carson, as of 8 a.m. on Friday, March 29, the fire has not grown any further from 106 acres and is now at 80% containment. Fort Carson said there is no longer any threat to structures on the post and all children have been accounted for and reunited with their parents.

The Patriot School Age Center and Cheyenne Mountain Child Development Center will be closed on Friday due to the large amounts of smoke.

“Patriot School Age Center patrons will receive care at Mesa School Age Center. Cheyenne Mountain Child Development Center mission essential patrons will receive care at Ivy Child Development Center. Patrons were notified through email and social media,” writes Fort Carson officials.

The area will continue to have smoke throughout Friday, and Fort Carson fire crews will be working on interior hot spots and clearing any smoldering timber.
