Fort Carson soldiers swap gear for gifts in toy ruck march

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — The air was filled with holiday magic as the 4th Infantry Division geared up, not for a typical workout, but for a cheerful mission: a spirited toy ruck march to spread joy throughout their community.

The soldiers donned their holiday attire, swapping the military gear out of their rucks for a load of holiday gifts meant for the children of active-duty service members stationed at Fort Carson. Soldiers exchanged their regular PT routine for a two-mile march with toys, books, and games destined to bring smiles to young faces.

“Soldiers supporting soldiers for the holidays. It’s a great opportunity for us to come out here and do something outside of the realm of just regular PT and to help our counterparts within, that can’t help themselves right now,” Command Sgt. Maj. Jill Annsteel.

At 6:30 a.m., the march commenced on post at Pershing Field. Many soldiers, accompanied by their families and furry companions, marched in unison toward the Mountain Post Santa’s Workshop.

Paula Dorsey, President of Mountain Post Santa’s Workshop, shared her excitement, stating, “No matter the size of the group that comes to us. It’s just so exciting to see the looks on their faces. They’re always so excited to be here with us… We’re here to build a community with the army and then be able to share with all the families in need.”

Upon reaching their destination at the Mountain Post Santa Workshop, the soldiers unloaded their rucks and dropped off their donations.

“It makes me feel really good. You know, it’s always, you know, better to give than to receive. And this morning… that was just an awesome time to have that opportunity,” said Lt. Col. Donald Hayfron.

Regardless of rank, any of Fort Carson’s active-duty members who have applied are eligible to receive assistance.

For those interested in contributing to the cause or volunteering with Mountain Post Santa’s Workshop, additional information can be found at Mountain Post Santa’s Workshop.

The community’s generosity and support continue to make a lasting impact, ensuring that the holiday season shines brighter for everyone at Fort Carson. This year, the organization reports a record-breaking number of 875 children, equivalent to 377 families connected to Fort Carson, will receive toys for the holiday season, marking the first time they served this many families since before COVID.
