Frozen in time: Family embraces arctic blast in Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — There’s nothing that warms the heart more than time spent together, creating memories that last a lifetime and pave the way for future generations. That’s what one family did in Colorado Springs during the arctic blast on Monday, Jan. 15, embracing the frigid air and spreading joy to their household and neighborhood.

“You can take the girl out of Minnesota, but when it comes to cold, Midwestern families sure know how to play,” said Ashley Groves, who now lives with her family in Colorado Springs.

Ashley said her husband, David, is in the military so they’ve moved around a lot, but said Colorado’s weather surprised them.

However, Monday’s cold still couldn’t keep this family indoors.

“It all started with a high school friend reminding me of the silly things we did back home as kids,” said Ashley.

Before her husband and six-year-old, Theodore knew it, Ashley was about to bring those memories to life. “They were questioning why I was soaking pants and bringing them outside,” wrote Ashley. “They got more suspicious when I started cooking ramen at 10 a.m.”

“Quickly they joined the fun, and we just couldn’t stop! It brought so much joy and fun on a bitter-cold day! True memories to last a lifetime,” reflected Ashley.

According to Chief Meteorologist Matt Meister, Sunday, Jan. 14 saw a record low in Colorado Springs at -8 degrees and a record coldest, high temperature of 9 degrees.

On Monday though, the real cold swept in, bottoming out at -10 degrees on Monday at 11 p.m.

Ashley said on Monday, it took the clothing and ramen about 15 minutes to freeze, and the sights lasted through the next day. “This was the great thaw when I got home from work yesterday,” laughed Ashley who shared the video below with FOX21.

And it wasn’t just for her family to enjoy.

“Our cul-de-sac became a scene with others getting word of the silly happening outside our house,” said Ashley. “Good news is what brings smiles – and a reminder [that] even on the coldest and darkest days – joy is found if you look for it.”
