Girls on the Run: Empowering young girls through running

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Dozens of girls from 3rd grade through 8th grade headed to America the Beautiful Park to run in the Girls on the Run 5K celebration on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Girls on the Run is a national nonprofit organization that inspires girls of all abilities to discover, build, and grow their self-confidence. The Southern Colorado team ended their season with the 5K race, giving the participants a tangible sense of accomplishment. 10-year-old Guinevere Thompson, the runner who crossed the finish line in first place, finished the 5K in 26 minutes and 46 seconds.

“I’ve always been kind of competitive and running is really my expertise,” said Thompson. “It makes me feel happy and it just lets me free my mind from all the things going on around me. And I just… do it for the fun of it.”

At the end of the season, the team completes a community impact project and the 5K race. Girls on the Run has served more than 2.5 million girls nationwide.
