(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) responded to a HAZMAT situation at Mitchell High School around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, after a malfunctioning cell phone began to smoke and emit hazardous fumes. The high school was temporarily evacuated, and six students reported dizziness.
According to CSFD, crews were dispatched to an alarm at Mitchell, where they found a phone in the main building smoking after a malfunction. Due to the hazardous gases, multiple CSFD crews, including HAZMAT, responded and performed multiple air monitoring tests in the building to ensure it was safe for students to return to class.
Crews assessed 26 students for injuries, and six reported dizziness. No students were transported to the hospital. Classes resumed just before 9:30 a.m.
