“He lettered in being an SRO”: Deputy honored by local district

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A Student Resource Officer at Lewis-Palmer High School (LPHS) was honored by students at a pep rally on Friday, April 5.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Wheat first made headlines in early 2023 after a video of him dancing with the LPHS Dance Team went viral. After four years as LPHS’s SRO, LPHS said he was moving on to become a Seargent with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO).

On Friday, LPHS came together to celebrate Deputy Wheat’s time with students and staff.

“Over the past four years, Deputy Wheat has served District 38 with distinction. His presence in the halls of Lewis-Palmer High School not only made our schools more safe but also more welcoming. Our staff, students, and community knew they could trust Deputy Wheat in any scenario, and he will be greatly missed. We wish him well as he advances in his career with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office,” said LPHS.

Deputy Wheat was presented with a letterman jacket with a pin for every club and every sport. In a post on social media, Wheat’s supervisor is quoted as saying, “Wheat lettered in every club and every sport. Basically, he lettered in being an SRO.”

“The unconditional love that was reciprocated to me yesterday in my send-off still leaves me with joyful tears and pride of the four school years I was blessed to serve at LP. While it’s evident I left a mark there, there is an even bigger one left on me…” wrote Deputy Wheat “I am leaving LP on a high note, excited for opportunities to return and see the continued growth. Thank you to LP and the greater D38 community for believing and trusting in me.”

FOX21 has reached out to EPSO, but at the time of publishing has not heard back. We will update this article with EPSO’s statement when they respond.
