(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — It will be a windy day for Southern Colorado with high wind speeds as a system travels over Colorado.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for High Fire Danger until Saturday at 8 p.m. for the Eastern Plains and a High Wind Warning for the I-25 corridor until 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning. There is also a Fire Weather Watch in effect for the I-25 corridor for Sunday.
For Saturday, expect winds to increase as the day goes on. Sustained windspeeds will be in the 30 to 40 mph range but winds could gust to 50 mph for the region. For some mountain areas including near the Rampart Range, winds could get up to 90 mph. If you are traveling to Denver, be advised that the area anticipates 100 mph gusts. Saturday night into Sunday morning will have the highest windspeeds for Southern Colorado with 60 mph gusts. High-profile vehicles like semi-trucks should be advised that these high windspeeds can cause trucks to be blown over.
In addition to high wind speeds, we will be very dry with humidity levels between 5 to 20% for Saturday and Sunday. This will add to high fire danger for the area as there will be lots of fuel available for a fire—if it were to ignite, it would spark and spread very quickly. Southern Coloradoans are advised to be careful with ignition sources due to the high fire danger.
