Horse rescued from collapsed septic tank in Pueblo West

(PUEBLO WEST, Colo.) — A horse fell into a collapsed septic tank and got stuck on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Pueblo West, and it took the combined efforts of several of the area’s emergency response departments to rescue her.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Pueblo West Fire, Pueblo West Metro District, Community Animal Rescue Team (CART), and a local veterinarian worked to rescue the horse as she sat in chest-deep sewage with only her head and front hooves sticking above the ground, according to PCSO.

The horse was wet, cold, and shaking from being in the frigid liquid in the tank. Rescuers put towing straps around her belly and under her front legs. The vet sedated the horse, and using a truck-mounted crane, provided by Pueblo West Metro, the horse was pulled from the hole and placed on the ground to recover from the sedation.

PCSO reported that the horse is awake, up on her feet, and doing well as of 6 p.m. on Saturday.
