(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A recount for the 2024 General Election State House Representative race for District 16 resulted in even narrower results and a final winner for the race.
On Friday, Dec. 6, the Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced the final votes for District 16 were completed, with Rebecca Keltie taking the lead by three votes with 20,641 votes (50.00004%) and Stephanie Vigil with 20,638 votes (49.99996%).
A mandatory recount was ordered after the race stood at 50.01% or 20,641 votes for Rebecca Keltie and 49.99% or 20,635 votes for Stephanie Vigil. The recount was ordered due to Colorado law, as the vote differential in the race was less than 0.5% of the winner’s total.
In a response, Vigil said she would look into “legal remedies” that would return the results to what the recount process initially determined. Vigil claimed the recount was a tie, and three Vigil votes were reversed during the canvass board’s review.
“Let’s be clear: three votes is hardly a landslide. So many community members have reached out to express their frustration. Please know that you’re not alone and I’m not going anywhere. We will continue to fight for our values together, in whatever way we can.”
Rebecca Keltie said she is aware she won by a “razor-thin margin.”
“I also make no bones about it – I won by a razor-thin margin and will work hard to earn the trust and respect of all voters in my district. And let this be a lesson to voters everywhere – your vote matters!”
The newest representative also said she was “disappointed” that Vigil “continues to lob personal attacks and threatens a potentially lengthy and costly legal battle despite the final certified results.”
However, she said she is “laser-focused on preparing for the legislative session ahead and working with both parties to make Colorado a safer and more affordable place for all of our state’s citizens.”
“I am deeply honored to represent the good people of Colorado Springs and will work hard to represent all voices in my district, whether Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or Unaffiliated,” said Rebecca Keltie.
